Ilya Glazunov, painter, People’s Artist of Russia, Rector of the St Petersburg Academy of Art
Throughout the many years of my friendship with Joseph, I have always marvelled, admiringly, at the human depth of his character, his staunch ideals in art and in relations with friends. But how many times, too, did I sense, behind the image of an irresistible condottiere, a vulnerability, as though of a child, which is the hallmark of a great artist.
Joseph Davydovich has a quality that I must mention as it is so rare in our grim and murky times: an imperative to help thy neighbour. Nor is it just an individual neighbour but orphanages and young singers and musicians, too. It is amazing really that, a singer par excellence, he has the knowledge and skills of a politician as well as a businessman. Everyone has heard of his endeavours for the benefit of Russian culture at the State Duma.
Dear Joseph, let me hug you as a brother! Thank you for all the good you have done!
