Galina Volchek, theatre director, Artistic Director of Sovremennik Theatre
Dear Joseph! If we were to make a list of your good deeds, where each of them took just one line, it would be a huge book. I was a witness, many times over, of situations when, seeking no gratitude, you rushed to the rescue of those close, or not at all related, to you, when you helped out strangers in distress.
And yet I want to thank you for something else: your unbelievable, fabulous attitude to your main metier. The passion, the gravitas, the commitment, without which your life on stage is unthinkable to you. Whatever the venue – a small club or the Kremlin – the audience could, and can, always rely on your willingness to put your all into the performance. Neither the size of the audience, nor the status of the concert, and not even feeling ill, are of any consequence; every time you are on stage, you are a champion – not of glory nor of success – but of art per se. You will never, under no circumstances, play false with the gift God gave you.
